Is your representative an Inbox Jockey?
Is your agent earning their commission, or are they just a high-priced auto-responder?
You might be paying a 20% tax on your own success.
There is a new class of "digital-native" agents and managers who have built a business model around passivity. They function merely as Inbox Jockeys - high-priced moderators who wait for the deals you generated to land in the inbox, and then take a cut for processing the paperwork.
If your representation is simply toll-collecting on traffic you built, they've become a liability you pay 20% for.
We need to distinguish between Administration and Representation.
Administration is reactive: answering DMs, scheduling calls, forwarding contracts. This is a commodity service worth a flat fee or an hourly rate. This is what your high school friend, parent or intern can do.
Representation is proactive: outbound deal flow, brand auditing, career pathfinding. It's fighting for your 5-year plan in rooms you can't enter yet. This is where expertise and relationships come into play, you want super stars, veterans, people who bring immense value to your operation.
The "Inbox Jockey" is dangerous because they give you the illusion of a team without the edge of a strategy. They are happy to take 20% of the harvest, but they did not help you plant the seeds.
However, the blame is not entirely on them.
Many creators are equally guilty of Inbox Negligence. You look at your DMs, see 99 comments from bots and trolls, and you assume the entire channel is trash. You stop checking. You let the inbox rot.
This is a massive operational failure. By ignoring your inbound channels because of the noise, you are missing the signal. Legitimate six-figure deals, high-level collaborations, and media opportunities are buried in that spam and garbage. You assume nothing good is in there, so you build no pathways for the gold to bubble up.
This is serious enough to reiterate. Too many creators are missing out on significant opportunities because legitimate companies offering serious pitches can't reach the talent. They are stuck commenting on posts, or trying to DM, and getting nowhere.
You can't afford a lazy agent, but you also can't afford to not have a way for offers to get to you. You need a system that filters the noise without blocking the opportunity.
Ultimately, we need to think about human capital and technical systems simultaneously.
1. Toll Booth Test: Look at your last five deals.
Audit: Did the agent bring the deal to you (outbound), or did the brand email you directly (inbound)?
Verdict: If 100% of your revenue came from inbound inquiries that you simply forwarded to your agent, you are overpaying. You need an assistant.
2. Open Channel System: Stop missing money because you hate spam.
The Fix: Create a dedicated partnerships@ email alias or send everyone to a Google/Typeform Form. Put this in your bio.
The Filter: For email, implement filters and assign someone responsibility for review. For a form, create a clear gate: "If you are a brand, fill this out." This forces legitimate offers to identify themselves.
3. The 5-Year Alignment: Ask your agent: "What is the strategy for 2031?"
The Reality: If their answer is "Keep growing on TikTok," you may want to look elsewhere. A true representative is planning your exit from the algorithm, not just your next post or brand deal.
Stop paying premium rates for an expensive auto-responder. Demand strategy, or handle the inbox yourself.
